The winter of 2011/2012 was one of the driest on record for the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The Tioga Road remained open until January 17th which made for some very unusual conditions in the backcountry. Walking into 20 Lakes basin felt a little like trespassing. Pressure cracks revealed ice that was several feet thick at Greenstone Lake. When the dark lenticular cloud began forming over the Tioga crest, I was thrilled. The clear blue ice combines with the unusual cloud also known as the “Sierra Wave” I doubt I will ever see the phenomenon again in my lifetime.
